FALSE PRIDE / VANITY HATH A FALL
Pride is inwardly directed emotion which has got two overtones – positive and negative. Positive pride refers to the satisfied sense of connection with other people and resultant happiness and a feeling of fulfillment that it entails; a conduct or an action which is appreciated by the people in general. For instance, we take pride in our soldiers’ for their acts of velour. They face the enemy fire for safeguarding the borders. Or still more when they lay their lives / give supreme sacrifice for defending the territorial integrity of the country. It is the positive trait for which appreciation comes from all and sundry.
The second connotation of pride is a giving exaggerated sense of importance. It is a negative trait which gives too much importance to oneself. Excessive pride could be in material possessions, acquired status, power and pelf, et al which may prompt a person to think himself apart from others. The main cause of vanity or pride is having high opinion of himself.
Ego is the main cause of this pride. Pride / vanity makes us too much self conscious without caring for its results.
A man drunk with pride is just like a stag which was filled with excessive pride. It used to be very proud of its long and curly horns. Even in front of other animals it used to show off because of its attractive horns. Not only that, so much it prided of its horns that it used to be ashamed of its ugly legs.
One day, as the stag was sauntering in the forest, with its heady gait, sooner it saw a ferocious lion than it started running towards the forest with all the force he could muster. There were thick bushes. It could have made good its escape but for its horns. These horns got entangled in the thick bushes. It tried its maximum to untangle and extricate itself but in vain. So the horns for which it was so proud of became a cause of its death.
When we are drunk with pride, it is bad but when we are drunk with the LOVE of our CREATOR, it is supremely beneficial for us humans. This love of HIS differentiates us from others.
With this intention in view, I have penned two poems, VANITY & DRUNK WITH PRIDE. Kindly appraise and comment.
When thy insights go out of control,
Thy self belief goes helter shelter,
Thy being is being filled with negativity,
And in your person and around you,
Thou weave a web – a false love of one’s own excellence,
When inflated sense of thou personal status makes a hearth deep in thyself,
In variance with reality in its actuality,
It is a conceited high opinion next to vice,
Throwing ethics to the whirl winds,
Your “I, me and mine’ takes centre stage,
Yee make out everything happens,
Due to thee and world revolves around thee,
Thou become centre of gravity in your own household,
And at your work place, et al,
You perceive work will take,
A biting beating if you sidetrack,
Even a bit from your chosen track,
Vanity is your creed,
Which you chase religiously,
With a wilder pace,
Forgetting the fable of a vane stag,
Who brimming with vanity,
Prided the fine twists and turns of his horns,
Hardly mixed up with its own clan,
With vanity gone deep in his head,
It sauntered the length & breadth of forest,
When in his conceited reverie, its horns entangled in thorny bushes,
It tried vainly to disentangle but futile its attempts were,
Vain vanity took its life and what he prided for,
Obsession with trumpeting thy own objective picture,
Heavily intoxicated with self esteem,
Mercy, thee deem others as dumb driven cattle,
And thou as scheming head,
With head but alas no heart,
A head full of ideas of self-idolatry, self appreciation aplenty,
Divorced from graces for others,
Others in your view are of little consequence,
Not worthy of paying even a lip-service,
Thee as a wick, emitting light and shade, thou believe,
This vanity is emptiness in the eyes of God,
Drunk in pride is disrespect to our Creator,
Breaking His strictures structured for the humanity,
God forgive these humans and refine them,
And infuse in them humane mentality towards his fellow beings.
DRUNK WITH PRIDE
Is a tendency most repulsive,
Produces nausea and what it entails,
Imbalances the body equilibrium,
And in the process, life’s rhythm,
Takes you away from yourself,
Brings in its wake thoughts disgusting
Finally a feeling hurting.
One drunk with false pride,
Stands on the legs of show,
Showcases his possessions aimlessly,
And his actions border on ruthless,
Mind brimming with conceit,
Never flinching in practicing deceit,
A peg full of pride,
Mesmerizes immensely thee,
Making the a frog in the well,
Frolicking in the area confined,
Taking you away from your own being.
A person drunk with our Creator’s Love,
Has magnetism to attract all fine things,
Fine-tunes our inner thinking in sufficient measure,
This Drinking, is the source of compassion and
Love emanates from our daily life,
Making the environs refreshingly tranquil,
This peg of drinking provisioned free although,
Is more intoxicating than numberless drinks one quaffs,
O, Almighty make us drunk with your
Peg, brimming with love of Your’s aplenty.
