ON OUR YOUNGMEN IN OUR COLLEGES & UNIVERSITIES

YOUNGER AGE-GROUP

An age full of vitality
An age full of agility
An age wherein you’re constrained to be careful
In knowing that you’re internally resourceful.
Our efforts ought to be to tap those resources
And make it an add-on to already acquired knowledge
And not to let this internal invaluable treasure

Unnecessarily to be leaked and frittered
By keeping a check on tendencies most puerile
Like seeking reasonable information
With a unstinted mission
That whilst at younger age
You’ve to have hunger for knowledge
From any sources you find accessible
From your educator or your fellow student
In formal lessons based on proper syllabi
Or thru informal debates and discussions amongst fellow beings
Experience your daily lessons practically
Soaking yourself in the sea of knowledge – completely
Whilst doing so many difficulties will be experienced
Surmount those complexities with mind most determined
With thinking that nobody will give you on platter anything
You’ll have to put in your best efforts what you want getting.

Educators ought to chip in whenever required
To drive out from within the young minds which is required to be explored
Sometimes with love and other times with a little rebuke
Lest these impressionable minds do not get disillusioned
By the immoral elements most detestable
And colour them in myopic vision so undesirable
God help draw out the potentials that is dormant in your young minds, so vibrant
So that they weather the storms of life with elegance & resilience.

ON OUR YOUNGMEN IN OUR COLLEGES & UNIVERSITIES

Youth is the period between childhood and adulthood when one is mature enough to distinguish between good and bad besides a period when one has vigor to take on life’s various activities with optimism. There is no specific age or fixed age – but it is generally taken from 15 – 25 – 30 years even from certain regions. It is also an undisputed fact that at this stage, the individual is dependent on others for meeting his/her needs (financial security etc), the need is that he/she has to take into cognizance the various limitations. The individual youngman has immense untapped energy but this energy has to be tapped suitably. Here culture of different youth and family background; economical and emotional maturity too plays a stellar role. When one is young – neither childhood nor adulthood rather in between. It is a fact that the energies of our youths should be directed for nation building and not frittered away. Here how best to exploit the energies of our youth in relation to JNU is moot point.

ENERGIES IN OUR YOUTH

Our coming generations should always keep in mind that their main stress should be academic excellence and channelized their energies to get knowledge and not get influenced or embroiled in unnecessary controversies thus spoiling their potentialities and energies including their most precious time thus adversely impacting their academic pursuits. While studying, there should be healthy debates on variety of subjects including political environments in the country or what is happening around the globe and impact that happening will have on us all; but these debates should be within the confines of freedom of speech and fair-play. What happened in JNU s a case in point?

FREEDOM OF SPEECH & YOUTH

Freedom of speech and expression is sacrosanct till such time it is within the confines of our constitutional rights not unfettered. Frequent workshops, discussions, dialogues etc on variety of subjects including spiritual related topics should be there; where eminent personages in varieties of disciplines, of repute should be invited to the universities so that each young student gets motivated /inspired in creating something unique for themselves and for the nation as a whole.

ROLE OF OUR TEACHING FACULTY

Our teaching faculty should help create conductive atmosphere in their campuses so that all round development of the personality of students occurs because these young people are the futures of any country and if they fall prey to unwholesome influences then consequences would be disasterous. These universities should not be merely for churning out degrees but providing leaders for tomorrow who contribute their mite for the country and not create disruptions in the Parliament, future scientists, future doctors, future technocrats, future academics, future multi-disciplinary personages who could contribute for the nationally and also to the internationally because today due to fast communication the world has become like a global village. This is only possible when breeding grounds are fertile for producing these future great-minds.

Our youth are the important constituents of any society. It is a period between childhood and adulthood when a person is mature enough to discriminate and distinguish between what is right and wrong but it is also a travesty of fact that during the course of this period one is swayed and become a subject of exploitation by the vested interests. There is no laid down age group between which the period for youth is stipulated. They are the foundation of any country and if their basic education is not upto the mark then it will surely lead the concerned country to its doom.

Over the years, the students are involving in politics more than they are spending their energies in studies. This is not to say that they should not take part in politics but what should be the limit of their participation. Actually the political parties have a motive, they want to prepare a second line of leadership to take over. Different political parties have students associations affiliated to their respective parties and in order to capture hierarchy of posts such as President, Secretary etc of Student Wing of their parties they spend a huge amount of money too on electioneering.

POLITICKING & STUDENTS

Only politics and no studies will make the students more intrusive in politicying than inquisitive in getting knowledge in the streams they are studying. What happened in Jawaharlal Nehru University and Jadavpur University in West Bengal wherein the students crossed all limits of decency and freedom that they raised anti national slogans not to speak of this, the students espoused the cause of breaking the country; thus worked against the interests of the country.
Sit is also indisputable that the youth of the nation should be aware of the happenings not only within the country but also round the globe yet in their pursuite to get knowledge they should not exceed their limit of crossing the limit. On the pretext of exercising the freedom of speech and expression, the students in their youthful passion just blur their freedom; when they have transgressed and crossed the limit is no known to them.

Offshoot of negative politicking bordering or crossing all limits of decency and sometimes against the very spirit and foundation of the nation is really uncalled for. It is also relevant to point out that young people should have outlets for expressing themselves on variety of subjects, including of course, the subjects which a few years back were considerd as taboo and the faculty members should intervene whenever there is any transgression which may snowball into controversy.

As the young men are not able to understand the exact agenda of different parties and become handy cogs in the hands of political bosses. The cross-currents of politics enguls the young minds and puts them in dire straits from where they find themselves difficult to extricate.

PRODUCTIVE ACTIVITIES BY THE STUDENTS

The youth should participate in the debates, discussions, symposium, workshops and listen to different viewpoints on myriads of subjects under the sun but under the ambit of their constitutional obligations whilst holding allegiance to a particular party. For instance Student Union (SU) holding allegiance to moiest ideology will advocate will toe the line of their causes of breaking the country as they are doing now in different states of the union. Furthermore, various SUs, with different philosophies occasionally fight their battles in the University Campuses itself spoiling the atmospherics of the school and in the process bring bad name for the university itself subsequently embroiling the entire universty in unnecesary controversies. The anti national and anti social elements or people working enemical to the naional interests play their role in stoking the fires thus creating untenable situation in the universities.

TEACHING FACULTY AND YOUNG STUDENTS

The teachers of any institution are the torchbearers of any educational institutions. Teachers should command respect from the younger students. They should offer healthy criticism whenever required at the same time when appreciation is required to be given they should be very profuse in that.

Relationship between teachers – young students should be based on mutual trust and respect but at the same time the teachers should keep themselves apolitical – nationalistic to the core, leading by example command admiration. Teachers should never forget that they are conscious-keeper of the youngmen under their care and thus they should bring forth qualitative change in the characters of the students. The teaching community should also keep a tab of the outside elements entering the campus with their vested interests and agendas and interacting with the students and leaving a negative influence on their opinion and creating indiscipline including law and order situations in the campuses. It has also been observed that the Union leaders behave arrogantly and thus setting a bad example for the other students thus polluting the academic atmosphere in the entire university.

TRADITIONAL VALUES

Those young-men who are brought up with traditional values act in a manner which they should remain disciplined, exert to educational pursuits, take part in games and sports to keep fit, take part in debates & discussions on variety of subjects including our course discussions impinging on national and international concerns. But care ought to be exercised that discussions and debates should not exceed the limit of ethical values, moralistic values and even freedom of speech.

The consequences of politicking and self serving teaching faculty which impact the younger generation are:-

  • Increasing politicizing our campuses leads to polluting our young men impacting not only the academic performance but also their career prospects.

  • Too much of politics and less of academics makes the students to forget their objective of getting knowledge from the course of studies rather than losing oneself in the din of controversies.

  • Too much of freedom in our campuses helps the anti social and anti national elements to not only make entry but also leaving a negative imprint on the young impressionable minds.

  • Not caring for the rules and regulations by the students leads to indiscipline in the campuses thus our campuses become breeding grounds for anti social and anti national activities.

  • Awareness is important constituent for any discipline to be followed in life but how to enhance this awareness about the condition in the country, in the world at large etc.

  • It is time when one has huge reserve of energy, but this energy has to be directed in right direction – in art, science, as per the aptitude to which that youth is having, not pressurized, not thrown in any direction,

  • Mind control. Young students should always keep in mind that unbridled ‘mind’ is essentially dangerous for their all round development. For this they should try learning everything and practicing good Karma for ultimate good with the belief in ‘cause and effect’.

  • Patriotism. Young people should always be taught about loving their country of their birth and afterwards loving all humans when they raise themselves above narrow ends.

  • Responsibilities of the teaching faculty. The teachers should educate in such a way that besides academics, the traits of being humane, benevolence/compassion, good deeds including shunning those who poisons the mentality of the young minds.

Finally Young people should keep in mind. ‘Whatever happened was good, whatever is happening is good and what all will happen in the future will be good’ and act accordingly.

ON PURPOSE OF LIFE

ON PURPOSE OF LIFE

Whilst we see the light of the day when born

Oblivious of our environs
What is hereabouts or thereabouts around
Was totally unknown
Every need was met by the mother
Who brought us to this world of ours
Worriless most of the time

Merely a cry could attract attention

And child’s needs are met with sheer affection.
Then mother started teaching
Small-small things which added together
Culminating into huge base of know-how
Then the process of discrimination started
What to be followed or incorporated
And what to be left untouched.
Thereafter the meaning and purpose of our life starts
Seeping in our system slowly but surely
Impacting not merely our body and mind but also our eternal soul
Making us able to adjust with unpredictable world around
After sailing through varieties of experiences
Some good and others not so good ones.
If we perform our daily chores
With sincerity and integrity at our command
We earn goodwill from our fellow and God Supreme
Mentally – in total control of senses
Spiritually awakened to follow down-to-earth path
Facing the challenges of life with aplomb
Both individually and collectively with community
Adjusting with the environs in which individual is a part
But in all these principled stand ought to be only single one
To keep in mind that we’re not apart from the One
Who created everything around
And have realisation loud and clear without a shred of doubt
That without His will and wish nothing moves
He is our Master – the Supreme Lord
And we’re His children – the dearest ones
Whence we know this all
We become self conscious of the whole lot
Then we know the purpose of our life.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF OUR LIFE?

Most of us remain mystified on one pretext or other with regard to real purpose of our extentence or purpose of our life. For finding true answers to our problem we knock different doors for plausible answers. But question arises, do we find these answers? The purpose of finding solutions to our perstering problems we remain gropping in the dark – and try seeking the answers from various sources. The sources we seek help may have their own problems to tackle and put us in still more confused state about our problems rather than offer us any tangible solutions. Not finding any answers to satisfy us, many of us feel disallusioned, and may become too much fatalistic or out-and-out athiests. This happens most of the times; we agree about this or not is entirely different thing.

Life is a curious, an admixture of lows and highs. A man may have material prosperity but may not have a sound health to enjoy the materials in possession earned with or without following right course. Some who do not have much by way of wealth may still enjoy life to the hilt because of his/her inbuilt satiety with whatever God has given. That fellow does his/her duty with the best of his/her capability and leaves the fruits of Karma to God; no matter what result his action leads; he/she does not lose his/her inner calm. Only few are endowed with this type of attribute. In fact this quality comes when we’ve experienced all types of ups-and-downs in our lives and know how to appreciate or otherwise, a particular situation and accustom ourself accordingly.

Disregard God is perilous

There are some who think that this world and all creations are normal Natural phemenon and there is no hand of God in it. Experience reveals it otherwise. The tenure of our life on this earth is limited and uncertain. We plan for distant future and for this we tend to go overboard in doing so sometimes without realizing that our span of term here is tentative. Our life being impermanent, we’ve to remain steadfast in our conviction that the life given to us is a precious gift by our Lord and we’ve to fulfil the purpose for which we’re born – to always remember Him. Commonplace sundry busy schedules to pursue our worldly goals without realizing our true purpose in our life. When and from where unexpected natural calamity may visit and destroy us nobody knows for certain. He is the One who annihilates darkness amongst us and spreads light. The case of one of our soldiers buried deep under the tons of snow for several days in Siachen in J&K was found alive (though he died afterwards) but how he remained alive?

Besides performing our daily duties sincerely, it is a must that we become self aware by delving into the inner recesses of ourselves. By so doing, we shall find out that we’ve immense potential to be tapped and put to practice in real life; keeping in mind that life is not always a bed of roses; butter and honey does not flow always. Feeling exited when a good tiding comes and feeling down and out when something untoward happens is hardly a solution to the problem at hand.

Then what is the real purpose of our life besides doing our everyday jobs for our sustenance. It should never be forgotten that this life of ours is uncertain; being martals, brings in its wake some good and bad options. Firstly, we can opt for earning our honest living and satisfy with what we have. Secondly, being satisfied, gives us the option of utilizing our available time and space for pursing spiritual path. Keeping these in mind, we can act our part for which we are most suited without harboring astronomical personal desires and excessive expectations, interact with people we come across, get help when we are helpless, help others in whatever way we can with our resources available with us when and where needed, distribute smile and not disquiet, flow with the current in the best way we can thinking it the task assigned by our Creator, we should always remember that whatever we give others we shall be receiving the same in the same measure. Besides we should not be swayed by extraneous pump and show of anything alluring and finally and most importantly whilest transacting our routine functions we should always associate ourselves with our Creator. Teach this triple truth to all: A generous heart, kind speech, and a life of service and compassion are the things which renew humanity….Words have the power to both destroy and heal. When words are both true and kind, they can change our world. Gautama Buddha.

DETOXIFYING OURSELVES FROM OUTER NEGATIVE AGENTS

For realizing the purpose of our existence, it is important that we keep our mind clear of any negative agents which do not let us act freely in order to gain self awareness.

  • Man is mortal. We should never forget that we have taken birth and our death is certain – we’ve to leave this body of ours along with what worldly possessions we’ve amassed. And if we believe in the theory of incarnation then it is paramount that we do right karmic deeds which add to our Karmic credit and lessen and remove our Karmic debt.
  • Our Action (Karma) should not adversely affect others. To keep ourselves happy it is a must to think that our action (karma) is not in any way impeding others’ progress. How can we be happy if we disregard others’ adverse affects due to our misdemeanor (intentional or unintentional).
  • Fear factor. Some unfounded fear keeps pestering us. Fear is another agent which keeps our mind occupied most of the times. It is may the fear of our close relatives or others who come in contact with us. Then we are fearful of our death perennially so much so that we fail to conceive any tangible solution confronting us; without delving on the thinking that the one who is born has to die one day.
  • Emotions. Emotions are the blocks for heralding any new thought and our unfounded emotions perturbations prove counterproductive to our very adjustment in new environs. We’ve to control/check our emotions and not let them go berserk and ruin our chances of forward movement. True emotion of love should be liberating and not binding.
  • Expressing love. It is not mere possessing love but utilizing this positive attribute in daily life is the need of the time. Love brings in its wake reciprocity- be it from our God, humans, animals or birds or plants.
  • Purifying the mind and self. We have to purif our body, mind and soul; remembering that our body has to perish with all its desires but the soul bears the brunt of our actions.
  • Control over desires. To live a life in accordance with the Will of our Bhagwanji, we’ve to rein in unreasonable desires though we cannot bridle them all.
  • Ignoring God is not beneficial for us. We all are accountable for dereliction of our duties. We can hardly say that somebody else will have to suffer the pangs of our mistakes. We can hardly say that we’ve transacted somethhing out of sheer ignorance. Nothing is forgiven and forgotten in His domain. Only we can minimise the affect of our action by good deeds.
  • Meditation removes ignorance. We’ve may have taken in many ills from any source; our previous births (believe it or not it is our free will and wish), our peer groups, our relatives etc but nobody but us have to suffer the pangs of our actions. Through meditation we can, slowly but surely, remove these dross habits which are taking us backward spiritually and otherwise. Hence the Karma of ignorance could be removed through meditation.
  • We can ignore anybody in our life but ignoring God will not do any benefit.

LOVELY LOVE DAY – VALENTINE DAY

NEW MEANING OF LOVE FROM SAINT VALENTINE.

Saint Valentine gave to us a new meaning to LOVE. Proceeding poem and description is for your appraisal.

LOVELY LOVE DAY – VALENTINE DAY

A love where we prefer losing
A love which is not demanding
A love which knows only sacrificing.

A love which gives joy in giving
A love which teaches us ethical & moral modes of living
A love which is bereft of suspecting.

A love which paints everyone with humane brush
A love which gives a sublime love a gentle push
A love which has Divine grace for its success.
.
A love which dies not,
A love which broadens its base without bias
A love which gives synergy to us all.

A love which cares not for caste, color or creed
A love which excels in every way we feel
A love which kindles trust amongst soul-mates.

A love which is eternal and magical
A love which is not theatrical
A love which is God sent and not mechanical.

A love which asks nothing in return
A love which burns all suspicions in turn
A love where differences get resolved on the basis of trust.

A love which cares not, even if the ultimate result is supreme sacrifice
A love which showers only fragrance

A love which emanates from our inner self.

A love which remains unaffected as time passes doubtlessly
A love wherein even slippery time puts its indelible stamp of its immortality
A love we would like to quote for its sacredness oftenly.

Thus cleansing the polluted air around,
Spreading goodwill for all without doubt

Suffering  pain for the love-mate without even a slightest moan.
Like the Love of Saint Valentine,

A Catholic Bishop of Terni

In Roman Empire
Who for love’s sake attained martyrdom,
For solemnizing marriage secretly,
Of condemned soldiers,
For whom marriage was a bar
Under the Roman Empire’s law
And marrying those forbidden once to marry,
Attracted the Saint’s imprisonment,
And ultimately martyrdom.

While in the condemned cell of a prison,
With his miraculous touch he cured the daughter of the jail warden,
Saint Valentine sent out a farewell letter,
With words so eternal in nature,

“From your Valentine”,

These words have become a grand brand,
Presently for us all to express to our love one,
With a huge sprinkle of pride,
Mixed with a huge smile,
Lasting for good in our imagination,
And in real life too, we live with complete affirmation
That love binds us & bestows us God’s eternal compassion.

Valentine’s Day is celebrated on 14th February every year. There is a very popular account that a Christian Saint was imprisoned and prosecuted under the Roman Law for solemnizing the marriage ceremony of soldiers who were not allowed to marry. Saint Valentinus performed the marriage of these soldiers and broke the Roman Law. There is also a legend that while being in the prison; he healed the daughter of the jailer named Asterius.

Legend has it that before he was to be beheaded he wrote a letter finally signing as: YOUR VALETINE to bid final adieu.

For expression of love for our soul-mate, it is a important that we fulfill all the ingredients which are needed. such as; our intention and attention that we pay in expression of our sincere love, synergy in that love, willingness that may spring from our inner self, etc. It is also a must that we’ve full trust on our soul-mate.

For love to be effective, it is a must that we develop an initial belief or trust that we are ready to have a right friend, with traits in agreement with ours to shower love and affection. If one finds friend of his/her liking, it is equivalent to love of our Lord. This love of the Infinite Absolute Lord facilitates us humans to distribute this love to others with whom we come in contact with. His eternal love also solves many of our own problems concerning love.

A love of a soul-mate is unique in nature, the person with whom we want to develop friendship, we have to accept him/her wholly – with all weaknesses and strong points. True love transcends all boundaries, all differences based on colour, creed, caste etc. It is pure and simple love. No questions asked about anything else.

There are two ways of finding an appropriate life partner; firstly love at first sight and secondly somebody arranges the same and he/she could be termed as the our life-partner (this is termed as arrange marriage, where marriages happen according to Hindu religious beliefs; where Vedic Mantras/Hymns are chanted, by taking seven vows around the fire with seven promises made by both the partners). Or there may be other customs and traditions in other religions for marriage.

Anyway, we can have true and sacred love with our soul-mate with basic premise of  following parameters:-

(a) Trust each other without any strings attached.

(b) We should exhibit emotional maturity while ironing out differences.

(c) Take her/him to the inner recesses of your heart and feel that he/she remains in your imagination though he/she may not be physically present with you.

(d) Thinking about him/her may evoke a feeling of joy and sometimes you may skip a heartbeat for your partner.

(e) Creating a strong affinity with the soul-mate of yours even in his/her absence.

(f) Sharing joys or sorrows together, good and bad situations, etc.

(g) Not to hide anything from your partner so as to develop indelible impression of friendship.

(h) We should forget and forgive each others mistakes which may creep in sometimes.

Love has many manifestations. When one is immersed in it, he/she gets everything in losing everything even the most precious one for us. While we take love as a God’s gift, love gifts us many things in return too. This return gift is all encompassing – a saintly feeling for us all. We do not care for our life, if that is at stake for earning the gift of love. We want losing everything including making supreme sacrifice for gaining the ultimate LOVE.

May this day usher in indelible love to us all and removes doubts and differences from us all in fact without biases and live happily.

WISHING YOU ALL A HAPPY BASANT PANCHAMI (On 12th Feb 2016)

WISHING YOU ALL A HAPPY

BASANT PANCHAMI (On 12th Feb 2016)

It will not be of any exaggeration that diversity of India is well articulated since time immorial. This diversity may be in relation to religions (Eid, Christmas Day, Diwali, Dussehra, etc) , regions with variety of cultural traditions besides localized festivals like congregation/fair to commemorate family deities/Demi Gods, festivals in relation to climatic change, harvesting etc. Taking into consideration all these, it is but natural that we may surely have various occasions for various festivals either particular to a region or religion or in commemoration of a prominent personage who left a mark on the firmament of history. Then National Festivals like Independence Day and Republic Day.

Therefore, we in India, have different festivals which are celebrated with immense joy and religious fervour. Basant Panchami is associated with change of climate – it is well said: With Basant climate is on, winter season just ends. It is the start of pleasant season (no extreme cold or heat), the scenic beauty of yellow flowers of tamrind (sarswon) plants and other plants is really very attractive. It looks as though the Mother Nature has spread a yellow curtain on the fields. In other words, the Mother Nature is at its best in all its manifestations. Besides this, GODDESS SARASWATI’S PUJA (WORSHIP) who is the Goddess of Knowledge (Gyan) is also done on this auspicious day.

BASANT PANCHAMI

Our land is a land of festivals and fairs

We celebrate various events to get together

And mutually be a part of celebrations

With overwhelming brimming of emotions

To commemorate start of a season

Or in connection with a religious occasions.

Basant Panchami has religio-seasonal connotations.

A carpet of yellow mustard plants is one of the best attractions

People put on their yellow attires

And imbue themselves in natural colour

Even the food taken is coloured yellow

with saffron

Giving lively fragrance.

There is a legend attached to this festival

Brahma who is the Creator-in-Chief

Happened to see earthwards

He felt very sad on seeing the bare trees

Barren land bereft of greenery

He sprinkled some water from His enchanting jar

Lo and behold all

There appeared Goddess Sarswati

The giver of wisdom and learning

Music, art and craft and knowledge

Also termed as the goddess of Vasant Panchmi!

Lord Barahma too gifted greener to the plants in abundance

Bringing in its wake brilliance in natural sight

And verve and vigor in everybody’s life.

Yellow flowers are offered to Gods

Even our food items exhibit yellowness

With saffron strands giving yellow colour

Emitting fragrance everywhere.

People worship the musical instruments

Art, craft and all the learning mediums

For these are the gifts of Goddess Saraswati

Processions in the honour of the Goddess is taken

To implore Her to bestow us humans the wisdom

And power to find the difference between truth and falsehood

Her four hands symbolize ego, intellect, alertness and the mind

Her white dress is the symbol of purity

And loves truth of all forms

Her postures of sitting too has vast meaning.

Our humble prayers to Thee O Goddess Sarasvati

The embodiment of learning

We implore Thee to remove illiteracy

Remove ego as You are the giver of wisdom

And do imbue us all in THY  INDELIBLE COLOUR.

HARBANS KHAJURIA

ON GAMBLING AND ITS REPERCUSSIONS.

Holy Quran says: God prohibits gambling and games of chance in very clear terms.

Holy Bible  says:  For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?

Bhagwad Gita: There are many kinds of cheaters all over the universe. Of all cheating processes, gambling stands supreme…..

In Sikhism it is vividly enunciated: Sikhs are advised not to gamble in games of chance, but to earn a living by honest means while engaged in earnest hard work.

GAMBLING

Temptation for some ‘more’ easy money

A curse that we promote anyway

At first we start it as a ‘time-pass’

Thence it becomes a habit difficult to leave us

Easy to be formed but quite hard

To be easily forsaken at all

And finally becomes a cause of our downfall!

The question we should ponder

Resources earned with hard work

Bring forth prosperity and all round happiness

When used for our offspring

And dependents we hold dear

Besides elevating our Soul to new heights.

Whereas money earned

Other than the sweat of our brow

Like from impulsive gambling

Or through unpredictable betting

Being easily made is frittered away very easily

This money when used for our children and love ones

Bring about results so gloomy

That we are stunned as to how it all occurred eventually

And with it all we lose sheen of our own soul!

We become slave to gaming as a habit

Through constant repetition

Form a permanent addiction

Leading to physiologically harsh implications

Along with psychologically severe afflictions

This way we become cause of our own destruction

This way, we not only ruin our own selves

But the future of our well-wishers.

ON GAMBLING AND ITS REPERCUSSIONS.

Even as we ponder: Habits die hard’ yet there are the myriads of habits which not only adversely impact the individual concerned but also the entire family to which that individual belongs. Habit of gambling is one amongst them. Many a families have had disastrous repercussions financially, socially, morally and physically.  It is a vice which sullies our soul ultimately.

The literal meaning of gamble is to play a game or match wherein outcome or result is uncertain or a pastime which depends purely on chance or a bet with an intention and expectation to reap windfall profit – a shorter gain. People may say, in life we take so many risks and let there be another risk for earning randomly without botheration of hard work. If only this were so simple! It is not so as we all know, it is a reckless or hazardous and downright negative behavior/ habit which impacts not only the individual concerned but also the entire family.

Gambling may also include risking on some unsettled issues or agreements of household or betting or wager on some unpredictable result of a game like cricket, hockey or football which wholly depends on chance – result could be any. Investing in stock exchange also is a sort of a gamble. There is a huge risk involved. The stocks we put in our investment may become bullish or may crash to abysmal levels. This uncertain boom or doom may put ourselves high or may dry us of all our resources at our command.

What do you call a bettor – a empty brained who neither thinks about himself nor of his entire family. The honour and future of entire family is put in disarray by a foolhardy fellow. He is dishonest to himself, his entire family, his community and finally to his Creator? Fact stands out that those who are gambling addicts are affilicted with mental and physical problems (mood changing, cannot be relied upon for any decisive action under the sun besides may have personality disorders).

The daily habit we have cultivated over a period of time with our own sweet-will like various types of addictions like: smoking (nicotine from cigarettes is addictive like heroin which not only adversely affects our lungs but also brain besides it produces undesirable affects on almost all the parts of our body including brain), drugs (Intake of drugs could have both short and long term implications on our body and also leads to addiction besides when addicted, it is difficult to get rid of this risky habit without the help of an experienced medical practitioner) and other health risky habits, these habits are easy to form but difficult to erase from our system.

We know what happened in the famour epic Mahabharta to Pandavas who wagered everything in the game of a dice with Kauravas. Shakuni induced the Pandavas to wager one precious things after another and won everything (their kingdom and everything that it contained, their own selves including  their most precious gem their consort Dropati). The entire loss was due to the hope of winning and paid heavy price after losing everything. This was done basically by the deception and conceit of Shakuni. We also know what was the consequence of this deception and consequence. Pandavas were exiled and even after their tenure of exile  was over they were subjected to different kinds of discrimination. The result of all this was a most ferocious battle between Pandavas and Kauravas in which there was death and destruction wroght on Kauravas and even the winners Pandavas too lost much. This epic of Mahabharta should be a guide for us all what a gamble can bring about – a total destruction.

Then there is tradition of gambling on Diwali day. It is believed that on this day Maan Parvati played dice with Lord Shiva. But unfortunately, some irresponsible people just continues and make it a habit to gamble even staking high to earn more after this festival. Yesterday, I happen to meet a fellow who had lost a hefty sum of money on the eve of Diwali (on which it is viewed that if we gamble, good omen befalls on us for our entire life). The entire amount was taken from the other party on an interest @ 10 % per month which comes to whopping amount per month. This fellow was forced to give this interest from monthly payment. On paying this huge rate of interest, he was left with only a paltry amount with which he had to meet his entire month’s expenditure  including the fee of his children; while his principle amount remained intact!  This individual and his family members who are dependent upon him entirely were left to fend for themselves. What predicament, this insensitive person had put himself and his entire family! This case shows to what limit our greed could take us and consequences it can lead us to.

Not only this one, there are many examples in which the person(s) concerned  could not stand the ensueing trauma of repayment to the creditors and were forced to commit  suicide leaving their families in the lurch for good. This is a problem gamblers or gambling addicts who wager everything with an expectation to win to become rich without  hard work / sweating fall in the pit of uncertainity for good. Compulsive gambling is a vice and lowers the person concerned morally, socially, physically, emotionally/psychologically and even spiritually.

Doubtlessly, there are some adverse implications for the addicts and their families who resort to gambling. These include:-

  1. Economical implications. Consequences of becoming rich instantly through gambling has financial implications for the entire family when that addict wagers everything including home and hearth. This loss is felt by the entire family; the children in the family for whom money is required for their upbringing and schooling suffer adversely. More often than not, compulsive gambler lose their jobs because they are not able to devote wholeheartedly on the job-at-hand.
  1. Adverse Implications on children. It becomes all the more problematic for the children whose parents are gambling addicts. They are either left at home or somewhere else while both the parents gamble and one can very well imagine the predicament of these hapless children when both of the parents lose. Ultimately, it has been observed that the children too become gambling addicts when they grow up and are forced to live a life which their parents led.
  1. Sociological Implications. When there is somebody in the household who is a gambling addict, the entire family suffers. There is a threat of creditors looming large and the entire community comes to know of it all. Worse still a police case may also result in some cases. This, many a times, causes irreparable damage to reputation of the entire family. All members of the family face social stigma.

  1. Psychological implications. When there is an addict in a particular family, everyone in the community comes to know about this fellow. This way, the entire family experiences emotional and psychological problems resulting in mental and stress related diseases.

  1. Physiological Implications. While an addict in the family just fritters the hard earned resources due to greed for more, the members of the family have to fend for themselves. They are constrained to live with less or no resources at all; the family members are forced to live frugally impacting their physical wellbeing.

  1. Gambling and Spiritualism. Gambling is associated with attachment and greed for more worldly possessions and hence a negative Karma and carries with it a disgrace of negativity whereas spiritualism is associated with knowledge (Gyan) and when this knowledge is used practically it helps us in transformation of ourselves holistically – not merely religiously but in moral and ethical standpoints too we acquire higher platform. But gambling as a vice snatches all these from us.

The following suggestions are made for the one is swayed/lured to gambling curse and turned into addicts:-

  • Habits are formed through repetition. This is true for good and bad habits. We may start gambling as a mark of religious practice (just innocently) but end up having a perennial habit. Then why to gamble at all – even as a mark of religious ritual? A bad habit cannot be construed as good one even when a religious tag is attached with it?

  • Greed & Gambling. When the stakes are higher then our expectations too become higher and it is not that our expectations are always met, then what? We lose. This loss of our precious earned resources take toll not only as an individual but also our family too gets aftershocks. This greed for anything has to stop. Earnest earning through hard work pays huge dividends should never be forgotten.

  • Honest earnings bring prosperity. It has been experienced that if we use the hard earned money for the family, it will bring huge rich dividends for us and our offspring. Resources  coming through corrupt practices, like gambling etc and used on our children bring dismay and negative results ultimately. ‘As you sow so shall you reap’ is the best example for this.

  • While wagering remember that there is somebody waiting for you at home who loves you. While we are gambling, we should never forget the unfortunate examples of those who lost their everything including the members of their families through the scourge of gambling.

  • Cultivate good pastime. It is well said: ‘ An idle brain is a devil’s workshop’. We should cultivate some positive and productive pastime so as to utilize our spare time so that we may not be lured by some dangerous game like gambling or betting.

  • Children should be kept away. Even when we are playing some innocuous games like rummy or cards even when the stakes are very little, the children should be kept away from these all lest they too fall prey to these.

  • Accept your fault & determine not to gamble. Problem with us is that, in the first place, we do not accept our fault. It is a eternal truth that till such time we accept our fault, we cannot rid ourselves of gambling or any other malaise that bedevils us. Therefore determination to rid of any vice or evil precedes acceptance. Being rigid on our part will not help find solution to the pestering problem hence choice is on us whether we want solution to our addiction problem or not. This problems of addiction to gambling was created by us and we have to seek its solution, the sooner it is done the better?
