An ideal teacher is a gift of Almighty God

A human being who is kind-hearted and humane to the core

With traits of tenderness galore

And a huge reservoir of patience

Along with attitude bereft of any discrimination

Towards the pupils, he/she teaches with concern

A sincere attribute with a firm belief system

In giving rather than taking

A modest one who disseminates knowledge

Gleaned over a period of time

In order to remove the ignorance of the learners

And infuses enlightenment with self-composure 

And transforms his/her raw pupils

Into fine-blend of acumen sufficing with information

Of necessity, should know the weaker aspects of the pupils

Adopts different methodologies to set right the weak spots

With an intention to make amends through innovations

With a lot of motivational appreciations

As and when needed most essentially.

He/she is firm like a rock

But soft like ice when needed hugely

With the gentle demeanor and pleasing personality

Impresses the students with the lessons imparted so expertly

Such a teacher is sought after by the students personally

To transmit the know-how gained diligently

By trial and error method, so skillfully

Or through subject interaction technique

Or Froebel method of freedom to act in a stimulating atmosphere

Then Montessori’s method tells us about atmosphere most peaceful

With stress on social justice and community justice and fair-play

Or through discussion and collaboration

With each other for knowledge distribution

Or through knowledge gained through experimentation

To clear any doubts that may arise from time to time

Teaching could be by a formal teacher in the formal institute

Or informally through any informal society institutions

Like temple, mosques, and churches

The purpose is to disseminate instructions

Either formally or informally

And make the pupils face people purposefully

After acquiring the needful schooling

And an ideal teacher is a resilient thread in all these teachings

Laying the foundation of a child on stronger footings.


Importance of ideal teacher, as a national builder, although is acknowledged and appreciated, yet, one thing that needs to be remembered is that a teacher should be dispassionate or unbiased in attitude towards all the students. A good teacher should command respect from the students, exhibit the high sense of integrity, should be a unifying force and above all should be unbiased. For a teacher, all the students are equal and necessarily need attention equally while clarifying all the concept queries of all the students.

As a great teacher, Lord Krishna exhorts his disciple Arjuna to cut doubts that have developed in his heart, burn the ignorance with the sword of knowledge (Jnana) while taking shelter in Yoga of action.


I was obviously pained after observing the unethical and un-teacher-like attitude of an educator. A student who had secured excellent results (A+) up to the last term was targeted and ignored to be awarded class scholar and the next second best student was awarded in the morning assembly by the Principal of the school before the declaration of the class results. Anybody can imagine the predicament of the genuine ‘scholar’. After she came to know about the information that she was not considered for the award, which legitimately should have been given to her, based on her credentials/record of the score during the complete academic session! She was completely shattered, only our consistent persuasions could persuade her to remain positive and further, we exhorted her to make still more efforts. Besides, we gave her an advice that education was an ongoing process. Here ups and downs will certainly arise; sometimes due to the student’s lackadaisical attitude, for not making an effort to excel, and other times, unfortunately, teacher concerned would be responsible for ignoring the right student at the right time and picking a wrong student due to her whim and fancies.  In this sort of a scenario, who is responsible? This is a biased attitude which a teacher should never resort to.


The teacher or a Guru should be knowledgeable, unbiased, compassionate, and his/her only intention should be to teach the students and make them a true citizens so as to face the vicissitudes of life confidently i.e. learn to be adaptive to the changed circumstances or fortune or face the challenges in life with belief and confidence.


In Mahabharata, we have the story of Guru Dronacharya, who wanted to make his pupil Arjuna a great Dhanushdhari (archer). His disciples were from princely families.. Eklavaya was from a Bhil family and his father was the leader of Nishadhas. Dronaacharaya refused to accept him as a disciple simply because he was from Bhil family. Eklavaya did not lose heart. He made a mud statue of Guru Drona and started worshipping and practicing archery through sheer determination and self-effort. So much so he developed his excellence in archery that he even excelled Arjuna.

Traversing through the forest with his Guru Dronacharraya, Arjuna observed a dog with arrows in its mouth due to which he could not bark. Though arrows were harmless to the dog, yet, the way in which the arrows stuck in the mouth was unique in itself. Further investigation leads them to Ekalavya and the mud statue of Drona. When asked how he developed the excellence in archery, Ekalavya explained without reservation that he got inspiration from the mud statue. Listening to this, Drona felt perturbed. He had promised that he will make Arjuna one of the best Danushdhari but Ekalavya excelled Arjuna.

There is a custom of Guru Dakshina  (teacher’s gift) which a disciple gives after he learns any skill. With this intention in mind, Ekalavya mentioned that Drona was his guru since he was hugely inspired by the mud statue. Ekalavaya offered Guru Dakshina in return for the inspiration he had got in archery. Drona wanted the right thumb of Ekalavya as a Guru Dakshina – knowing full well that without his thumb, Ekalavya will not be able to be excellent in archery and Arjuna will ever remain the master.- clearly showing his bias against Ekalavya.

In Holy Bible, it has been clearly enunciated that a teacher should be, in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity, and sound speech that cannot be condemned, so that an opponent may be put to shame, having nothing evil to say about us.


In essence, it is essential to understand that the parents have transferred the family traditions in the childhood period, in that comes the understanding of our family deities, stories of our ancestors with special mention of those amongst our ancestors who not only contributed for enhancement of the reputation of the family but also helped in uplifting the society in general besides telling the offspring about the principles on which the family tradition stood since known history of the family. All this transference helps the child in firming his/her base for onward forays into the next step. Here too, there are some parents who discriminate between their offspring based on ‘gender bias’.  The gender bias prejudice is really very harmful to the growth of a child. All the parents should desist from following this discrimination since girl-child too require growth and development as boys. It should never be forgotten that if we teach a girl, we teach the next generation of a family where she would be married.

The next step is the admission into the formal system of education or Gurukuls which these formal institutions used to be termed. Here the important role of the teacher or Guru comes into play. The teachers as a Guru.


The Guru (teacher) Shishya (pupil) tradition (parampara) is quite old in the Indian context. In Upanishads, the mentioned of Gurukulas have been made; here the progenies of the ruling classes and others used to get spiritual knowledge about scriptures such as Vedas, Puranas, Upanishads etc were taught. The age group for this purpose used to be from 8 to 12 years. Besides. religious or scriptural knowledge, the pupils (shishya) used to get weapon training too. leaning for instance there were Gurukula run by Drona to impart knowledge about scriptures and weapons – as imparted to Pandavas (of which Dhanushdhari Arjuna is the more pronounced one) then there were discourses on the Brahman In Guru Varuni’s Gurukula Indian tradition, Gurukula system of education was there in ancient India.


A few days back, I had the opportunity of visiting ServerGuy located at Pitampura, for fixing up and updating my Website (HARBANS INNER THOUGHTS) where: Dilsheen Kaur, Prerna Singh and Tripti Saini (interns) but still college students assisted me in every way  needed and completed the needful task to the satisfaction of the  Management of the Company but also that of myself. I found their etiquettes, value systems gleaned from their parents and schools and colleges ecosystem par-excellent.


There are the cases wherein the pupils from the same Guru or teacher turn out to be the best both in their ultimate performance and others an utter failure. There could be the difference in assimilation in the class by the siblings. All the educational activities depend on seriousness in which the students take their studies. For example, in the great epic Mahabharata, we are aware that all the Pandavas and Kauravas were the disciples of the same Guru Dhronacharchya. The Pandavas turned out to be the best learners whereas the Kauravas the worst ones both in scriptural knowledge as well as their expertise in the use of different weapons (archery, mace, spear, ax etc).

A good student pays respects to his/her teachers, is regular and punctual, attends all the lectures, understands all the concepts of lessons so taught in the class besides repeating and understanding the lessons taught, never plays truants, does not resort to lame excuses for not performing well in the examinations or does not use unfair means to pass the examination.

While we talk about teachers or gurus, a feeling of respect and reverence springs in our mind. I shall not venture to say that there is any teacher who is bad but sometimes may exhibit the appalling state of mind due to personal reasons or extraneous reasoning’s.


A teacher is one who not only imparts everything including good manner which may assist us learning good manners.

‘Prophet Mohammad: Oh Allah! I seek refuge in You from reprehensible manners, deeds, and whims.

(a)Knowledgeable – Well versed in the subject, plans and explains lesson besides ensures that all the queries are explained to the satisfaction of the students.

(b)The concept in studies. When all the concepts of the subject in hand are clear to the teacher, he/she would be able to teach the students lucidly.

(c) Intelligent and high-minded. The teacher should be of sound mind and develop the same sort of mentality to the students as well.

(d)Whose teaching motivates the students.

(e) The students learn through reverence.

(f)The students should work hard to get knowledge.

(g)Eagerness for teaching.

(h)Encourages inquiry.

(i) Teachers should work for the enlightenment of the students.

(j) Free from envy and jealousy.

(h) The teacher is ethical and moral to the core.

(i) Leads a simple life and becomes an example in simplicity.

(j) Should be selfless, self-realized/ self-aware and is fully conscious what he/she wants to teach.

(k)  No desire for money or fame in the real sense of terms.

(l)Should be self-aware and knows what he/she can contribute to the improvement of the students.

(m) One who leads a virtuous life

(n) A person who teaches us as how to imbibe purity in character.

(o)Guides the student for holistic development of the students.

(p)Guides the students and debates besides he/she corrects the students as and when required.

(q)Should be a man of principles.

(r)Releases his authority from the experience he has got in teaching.

(s)One who discriminates on the basis of some extraneous reasons.

(t)One who ignores some and prefers others.

(u) One who does not plan or prepare his/her lesson properly.

(v)One who is not clear about the concepts involved in the study.

(w)One who lacks foresightedness in dealing with the delinquent student.

(x)One who is totally detached from students and their wellbeing.

(y)The dominant trait with complacency.

(z) An ideal teacher is tortuous, loveable and dispassionate.

An ideal teacher should possess all the traits which not only changes the mindset of the students but also teaches them how to follow the path of Dharma and desist from leading Adhamic path so that they be adaptive to the change and live their lives with confidence and in piety.
