Value of an idea or a thought

In the form of an earnest attitude

Made applicable by us all

Or a thing, so important

Depends on the value it entails

For its utility or a price tag it carries

in our daily lives

These value systems are the precursor

Of our society in which we aspire

For new ideas of values to percolate

And make us move forward

Discarding what’re (ideas) old and faded.

Values are the prime-movers of any society

And keep us wrapped-up with the reality.

But in reality economic value and its possession

Cannot earn for us valuation

Equivalent to goodwill and wellness creation.

First of all, it is pertinent to delve on the literal meaning of word ‘value’. In economical parlance, the value of goods and services is determined by the price tag it carries. In international monetary matters, the value of respective currencies fall and rise due to internal and external pulls and pressures; these may be economic or other factors. For example, the value of a particular country currency falls due to overall internal production factors (like decline in industrial output, agricultural output) or when imports and exports are incompatible or when there is sluggishness in the international economies like fall in China’s growth story has made a huge dent on the internationally or when there is imminence of war/war like situation between countries. Then we have fall or rise in real estate or in bullion market or mineral oil value according to the domestic factors (location/geography of the place, transportation facilities, school and communication facilities available etc) besides current international economic cues coupled with demand and supply factors too affects the value of goods and services. Value tag of goods and services is thus given according to utility which is attached to it.

Before giving value or importance to an idea or a thought, it is worthwhile to understand what is the yardsticks or parameters used for measuring value of an idea or thought? It is used for a culture or a tradition – as to what is good in a culture or for a culture depends upon attitude and behavior of the society in question. How we can have orderly behaviour and attitude and best to use these in our daily lives depend on what we have imbibed / learnt from our home or from the society in which we are living? Our behaviour or attitude also depends on our behaviour vis-a-vis our society and its environments.

Humans are one of the best creations of our Creators; endowed with the power of discrimination besides all individuals have different traits, intelligence, understanding and aptitude to act. By practicing discrimination in our real life, we can adopt those values which are good for us and through the process of nihilism (refusing to obey a body of beliefs or doctrines or traditional values which have lost their utility in the present times may be due to moral or ethical standpoints). We have to follow value based life on daily basis; enjoying every moment of it while performing daily duties or karma to the best of our abilities besides living our lives most sincerely, honestly on the principles of ‘live and let live’.

The intrinsic value of life can be understood when we adopt those modes of life which are realistic in nature/lifelike – the present moment is the true gift of our Lord, we can adopt wholesome values this moment only. Procrastination leads us nowhere. Who knows about tomorrow – it may come or not for us?

It has been observed that half backed information or its application of value system is being fed to our young minds from various sources which themselves do not have much inherent knowhow about the value system.

The way we adopt fairness or even-handedness to handle some problems impacting our domestic life counts but our sincerity with which we follow the course of action also impacts the values we espouse.

Value also connotes the right or wrong with respect to:

  • Ethical values,
  • Moral values,
  • Traditional values,
  • Thoughts and actions with values attached,
  • Beliefs and faiths and values attached with these,
  • Norms of behaviour, family values and societal values.
  • Sometimes we become too much judgmental about a value; may be due to passage of time or value has lost its utility over a period of time.

In recent times, it has been observed that the value system has been eroded to a maximum extent – may it be on political or sociological sphere. I speak about the political scene of India. It has virtually become a wrestling match/mud slinging match. Selfishness is the prime motive rather than pubic service.

Examining the Indian political scene, the political values have slowly but steadily degenerated over a period of time. The richness in national debates that we used to have in both houses of Parliament have lost in value. The noisy scenes that are generated/slanging match in august houses by the parliamentarians seemingly look like a wrestling arena. Although so much of tax payers money is spent on these parliamentarians yet very little or no worthwhile contribution is being made by way of speeches on various legislations/bills. For instance, our chosen representatives are entitled for lifelong pension even for being an Member of Parliament for less than five years! We witness a lot of noise and din created sometimes without any reason whatsoever – just to stall the working of the houses. The unprecedented noise which is created every time something happens in any state (even though that comes under the jurisdiction of a particular State) its undercurrents are felt in the Parliament- more so in Rajya Sabha. Reasons may be any; for example the National Herald case, killing of a Dalit in Punjab or Haryana or due to utterance of some by some politician – invent an incident and stall the parliamentary work has become the order of the day. Any reason is sufficient enough to stall the proceedings in the parliament and disrupt the proceedings.

What is more appalling is that the politicians are dividing the people on the basis of caste, religion, sex, regionalism and thus exploiting the masses to the hilt for garnering votes. One of the causes of economic backwardness of the masses is the non-passage of some bills and legislation like GST and Land Bill etc in the parliament.

After we gained independence, the national building and its destiny rested with our people since they chose their representatives but noisy scenes as we witness in the parliament especially in Upper House is really appalling. Trooping in the well of the house and raising sloganeering besides disrupting the session after session is the order of the day. Now some politicians are not concerned about improving the lots of their people who voted them to power. They play power games as they are not interested in the service and upliftment of the masses. This has resulted in the disillusionment of the electorates. All this and much more has contributed in huge erosion in political values.

Knowledge about moral or ethical values notwithstanding, these are of no consequence till such time we utilize these practically in our daily lives. Mere theory will not do – practice makes difference. For example, though we’ve learnt that positive behavior and attitude like obeying the older members of our society are good but when it comes to really practically using the same we do it otherwise! Then possessing that value system is of no consequence – learning to use it practically makes sense. This value inculcation may be from our parents, gurus or any other members of our society. Merely listening discourses from religious discourses/congregations (satsang) are of little value till we use the same practically.

Then what we’ve learnt by way of value system ought to be clarified from a person who is well versed in spiritualism or Jnana Yoga (absolute wisdom) in the light of new knowledge revolution which is sweeping the world over.

Those who are having essential values and use these on daily basis are the real friends of the community. In Mahabharta there is a fight between Pandavas (positive forces having positive values system) and Kauravas (representing negative forces – without values). The one who is having knowledge always follows the good or positive karma, have positive frame of mind, leads a life full of compassion for others. While dark forces are self centred, conceited, negatively oriented and have their growth only as their sole ambition is to fulfill their self-seeking plan.

Knowing the inner truth is precursor for self realization. It is also a fact that we as humans are bestowed the power of discrimination; as to what is good or what is bad for us and proceed further in the path of self awareness.

Demon king Ravana too was obsessed with pride and wanted to suppress all the civilized and positive values prevailing at that time proved his negative credentials by even abducting Sita Mata, the consort of Lord Rama thus represented evil as its worst manifestation. Lord Rama (incarnate of Lord Vishnu) represented positive forces. In order to annihilate evil and establish good value system, Lord Rama killed Ravana. The domain of God can never be understood by demanding proofs that form essential part of science. Pure wisdom (Jnana Yoga) could be attained through pure value system.

  • We can realize truth and gain values for use in our life from any source of knowledge Quran, Bhagwad Gita, Bible Sri Garanth Sahib and other religious scriptures.
  • Transfer of traditional value systems from parents.
  • Transfer of value system from formal and informal institutions.
  • Present moment is the time when all those theoretical values which we’ve absorbed have to be made applicable practically first by trial and error method and subsequently these values become part of our daily habits. Past is dead, whatever done or not done by way of imparting values is hardly of any credence.
  • Value system which has lost its shine due to passage of time could be replaced with some gained presently.
  • Religious scriptural values are eternal in nature and hence could be revived and revised through discourses with religious preacher or Gurus who have got self realization.

What is traditional and modernity? Can these two could be married for a healthy and peaceful living?

Whilst we learn a great deal

From lessons transferred  by our forefathers

Becomes our stepping stone

From where we can pick and choose

Our life’s norms suiting us the most

Intention counts much

Freedom for deciding

What we want following

We have to introspect thoroughly

What was good in the days gone by

Called traditional way of thinking

Is still relevant at this instant indeed

Like paying respect

To our older members of our society

Observing fast on some days so vital

Celebrating our regional festivals

Including our national festival

Also,  events like Eid, Diwali, Dussehra and Christmas

With enthusiasm and with highest fervor.

Some norms of behavior

Which have lost their sheen with passage of time

These rites, rituals and social customs

Are  just shown the door permanently.

Healthy mix of both

Bestows us fond hope

For living a life full of peace

Proving – when both tradition & modernity marry

Together these grant us avenue to make merry.

What is traditional and modernity? Can these two could be married for a healthy and peaceful living?

A practice which has long since followed and passed from generation to generation with time is traditional in nature and what is relevant today is modernity. Then with the similar yardstick, moderns of every / any age considered themselves contemporary; in sync with the time and those in the past traditionalist and old and haggard hence obsolete. it may be social custom, rites, attitudes, habits etc? Our forefathers termed themselves as more value oriented, more accustomed to traditional way of thinking and outlook. Even now, people who have lived their lives, just compare the value system of today and then when they were young.

Who is traditionalist – individual, groups of individuals, family or society which follow particular way of starting the day’s chores, following a positive approach when thinking about an idea when initiating something new, thanks giving to the God when something gets fructified, thanking somebody who does some favour to us, fasting to cleanse body and mind, need for meditation and prayers for maintaining connectivity with God etc. These traditional value systems are just transferred or handed down by our forefathers from generations together so that continuity of good behavioral norms remains intact and pursued. It may be value system, cultural traditions in the form of various festivals in the community, particular beliefs/ faiths, rituals and rites, religious teachings/preaching, particular norms to be followed with it, method of prayers etc.

The traditionalists generally  make comparisons with modern world; like in olden days there used to be more respect for the older members of the society; joint family system prevailed where old people had a say in the affairs of the family, oriental ways of thinking where respect is paid to Nature and its varied forms (Creator with all His creations are duly respected – trees, animals including Sun, Moon etc). Thus the thought which we inherit from our older members of the society, a usual pattern of ideas or actions or a particular behavior pattern or a body of beliefs which are rampant in the society since time memorial.

Then there is question of cultural continuity, social behavioral patterns which bind us with our society and if we deviate from those norms we are considered as outcastes or pseudo-modernists. Just to live and grow with the society, we are constraint to follow traditional behavior patterns which suit us. This affords us the opportunity to assimilate with the members of our society.

Many a times, we break with the tradition due to present experiences and lessons learnt. There are some social and cultural festivals which are in fact local in nature but are continuing since long, these are:

  • Sankat Chouth Vrat (A fast which is observed by the ladies for the wellbeing of the children).
  • Karva Chauth. Fast observed by the married women for the wellbeing of their husbands (in this fast the women do not take even water and take water given by her husband when the moon is seen on the sky).
  • Vash Dua: This fast also is observed by the ladies of the household for the wellbeing of the entire family along with pet animals).
  • Ganesha Sankat Chauth Fast – this fast is observed on Ganesha Caturthi by the devotees of Lord Ganesha for the wellbeing of the entire family. This year this fast would be on 27th Jan 2016.
  • Observing Shradha for our dead ancestors. In order to keep the memory of our ancestors who are no longer with us, offerings of food is made to Brahmins – it is believed that by doing so we not only remember them but also pray for them.

Then we have special traditional relationship of respect for our Gurus – a most revered one who is a spiritual master and self realized individual. The relationship between disciple and Guru is most sacred – it is an old traditional based (parampra). The Gur Mantra given by the revered Guru is a binding force between the two. Guru helps the individual concerned in self realization (self aware) besides helping that individual in connecting with God. The importance of Guru is highlighted

in Bhagwad Gita as: Learn the Truth by approaching a spiritual master. Inquire from him with reverence and render service unto him. Such an enlightened Saint can impart knowledge unto you because he has seen the Truth.

It is in fact in joint family all members are duly respected and provided care and protection, our teachers who mold our life, our older members of the society etc. But as joint family system (Grand parents, their children along with their spouse(s) and others) has given place to nuclear family system (consisting of both the spouses and children) partly due to employment of the breadwinner and partly due to social compulsion/personal reasons particular to the spouses.

With the sea of changes that science and technology have wrought and resultant pressures that the family fabric have been subjected to, changes in our mindset per se are considered in essence a crying necessity. The things which were considered indispensable are dispensed with out-rightly – it is rather intriguing on its face value but it happens.

As time passes on, humans evolve, in thoughts and actions. This evolution takes for granted some of the traditional thoughts which has lost much of its utility or may have proven outdated with the passage of time.  It has also been observed that people living in rural areas are more traditionalists than those living in urban areas – urban elites are more updated about the new knowledge and knowhow and hence more prone to modernistic attitude.

  • Practice of Sati. Be that as it may, the earlier held custom of Sati; women whose husbands died, she was, regardless of her choice, had to sit in her funeral pyre duly bedecked and then pyre lit. She died then and there. Afterwards, a temple used to be raised at that place and respect paid to the departed soul. Raja Rammohan Roy, renowned social reformer educated people to shun this ill-conceived traditional    Presently the custom has been stopped through legislation (law of land).
  • Child Marriage. There was custom of child marriage, especially in rural areas. This practice was prevalent since long. This had disastrous consequences since both the boy and girl, at that time were very young in age – were dependent on others for their needs. This practice too resulted in giving birth to many a social, ethical and moral implications.
  • Then Bull Fight in Tamil Nadu – Pongal Festival Jallikattu has been banned by the Supreme Court recently despite notification by the Central Government.
  • Superstition of Crossing Path By a Cat When One is Walking. Some prevalent superstitions like crossing a cat the way when one is walking that path. It is believed that crossing your way by a cat means a bad omen and consequences are deemed to be disastrous though that person may be going for an important commitment.
  • Superstition of a Sneeze When One is Going For a Urgent Obligation. When a person is starting his/her job, and there is a sneeze by somebody. This is considered a bad omen. People just stop going for the job in hand.
  • Some other traditional superstitions like; entry of bride or groom in the family for the first time by putting some tamarind oil on the floor near the entrance gate of the house. This act is considered also auspicious for receiving guest of honour or welcoming newborn.

Life is like constant currents of the ocean – one current gives place to another and the process just goes on. With passage of time, the steady evolutionary changes take place in human psyche. With it all, the old beliefs and attitudes once held sacrosanct change with time. At the same time some social norms and practices still persist because of these are considered essential due to one reason or another. For example, what has been transferred to us by our forefathers and is connected with our family values and faiths; like festivals which has seasonal occurrence (Lohri, Holi, Pongal, etc) or National Festivals like Republic Day and Independence Day or some traditional religious based festivals like Eid, Dussehra, Diwali, Christmas or festivals which has regional or connected with family-tree connectivity/overtones continue uninterrupted. For example, I usually attend annual Khajuria brotherhood congregation {his  mela in Baba Jito Shrine at Zeeeri (Jammu District)}.

Modernists, are of the opinion that with time, our some of our traditional thinking should give place to modern thoughts. They view that even in the human relations immense evolution have resulted. The joint family system has given place to nuclear or unit family system, where only the wife, husband and the children live and share everything but live separately. Thus all the financial and other responsibilities are taken by husband and wife. More often, both the spouses are constraint to work. When both are working, then their children remain without quality time from the parents, consequently they remain loveless for most period of their childhood. Owing to this, children just while their time and are influenced by the situations and environments they are placed. Also, the modernists say that the traditionalists want to stick to the old and defunct traditional way of thinking. If one has to acquire a house for the joint family in the big cities (where both the spouses work), it is financially not possible and to rent a house too is not viable because the daily expenditure that it entails for the entire joint family is exorbitant. The modernists too think that they want their children to grow up independently – without any encumbrances. In modernist view, the spirit of enquiry is encouraged now whereas in traditional way of thinking it is discouraged besides everybody has the liberty to keep pace with the changes that are taking place. In their views, when science and technology has changed so much then why we have to stick to the old and worn-out way of thinking and acting. With availability of new goods and services has made it necessary for us to acquire these things for daily use. Though industrialization has made our environment polluted, resulting in various lung related diseases, yet there new medicines have resulted in enhancement of our life span.

Conclusively, it could be believed that both thoughts based on modernity and traditionalist could be wedded but for this to happen, we have to first understand which traditional norms require continuation besides we have to change our mindset accordingly. It is the combination of the two that any society could move forward. Any rigid stand on one could lead to widening the chasm between the two. But I opine that excessive reliance on traditional way of thinking could put a spanner in our progressive thinking.

The modern men should think that we are reaping the harvest of our forefathers for their inventions and also in the field of literature – not that modern man have not done anything. Hence, it can conveniently be deduced that our traditionalists must adopt some modern ways of thinking if cohesion and cooperation between the two is to be ensured. Modernity will not have its footstep on the ground if they leave traditional thinking.

We generally associate shallow with low or thin – it may be associated with individual or a thing. Shallowness could be with respect to water level, shallow breathing due to panic etc. Thin level of water also is an indication of shallowness of water. Shallowness could be construed as lacking in physical depth. It has been seen that a place where the water is shallower, the bulge is seen higher and steeper – thus taking a form of familiar sharp-crested wave shape. This results in erosion of soil when it touches the soil with a force.

This analogy fits well with the bent of mind of a person with shallow mentality – narrowness in thought percepts but forceful in tall-talks. A person with petty or one dimensional mentality who is in the habit of making exaggerated claims in regard to his proficiency, vision, accomplishment acumen et al but when put to use proves hallow in everything – no penetrative know-how about things he/she professes. An example of ‘Jack of all trades but master of none’ fits nicely with this sort of an individual. Seemingly, sharp on theory but less on delivery could be best described for this sort of a fellow. Also, this sort of an individual has single dimensional mindset besides having less depth in intellect, emotion or gyan (knowledge). He can neither help himself nor is of any help for others ultimately.

This shallowness in a person is in my views a self inflicted psychological tag that a person may have got due to his own style of functioning. It is because every individual who is created by our Creator has special characteristics which nobody other than that individual could fathom to have. Reasons for having this shallowness could be many. It may be due to situation that individual was placed beyond his control that that person could not reach the level in sync with the norms of the society which could be termed as deep one thus earning a tag of shallow.

It is opined that if an individual determines and wants to breach this ‘shallowness’ and reach to deeper state of existence could do so through personal efforts and sincere Karmic actions. We should not nurture a preconceived notion that a particular person cannot be refined or cannot change his preconceived notions. By broadening the outlook on day to day interactions and not narrowing our thought percepts that we can get rid of this feeling. He could if willingness that springs from within self. It should never be forgotten that every mind has the symptoms of growth but we have to make sincere efforts to exploit our inner depth of knowledge that we all possess amply. A man of action does not deviate from his course of action. This has been given In Chapter 6 of Bhagwad Gita, it has been emphasized: As a lamp in a windless place does not flicker, so the Yogi, whose mind is firm, remains steady in the meditation on the self.

A person with   intelligence, maturity and strong emotionally, compassionate in disposition and having knack to discriminate between good and bad is a person who could face challenges of life squarely. He is a ‘guy’ having all the characteristics of compatibility in any situation that person is placed. May it be good or bad. This sort of a person has a vast sense of accommodation for his fellow beings and is easily accessible. He could be termed as a person with pretty deep sense of responsibility and is just antithesis to anything that shallow person possesses.

In contrast, person with low esteem of oneself, not making effort to improve, viewing everything with his own narrow prism, a frog in the well type of a person can also improve. For this to happen, the person concerned firstly have to change his own mental outlook, here psychological alertness is called for not an attitude which limits our horizon.

An individual with shallow mentality has the following drawbacks:-

  1. Low self esteem but professes to be having more.
  2. One dimensional mind or petty mentality bereft of any maturity in thought or action.
  3. Interferes with others’ matter on any or all pretexts.
  4. Have no penetrating knowledge on anything.
  5. Narrowness in thoughts.
  6. Sharp on theory but hallow on delivery.
  7. An person with shallow mentality is buried under the weight of his own contradictions.
  8. Shallowness may be due to some adverse environment at home or the place that person is living.
  • We could broaden the outlook and bring positivity in life, hollowness or shallowness in life will just evaporate.
  • Shallow mentality could be refined if sincere efforts are made by an individual with ample grace from our Lord.

In great epic Mahabharta, on being born blind, Dhritrashtra, the father of Dharyodhana always played victim for attracting attention and sympathy. For his blindness, he blamed his destiny and Iswara. And after the demise of his brother Pandu he was crowed as a king due to his angry outbursts of being victim by circumstances and all others who come in contact with him.

Playing victim is a height of irresponsibility. The one who plays victim, does not want to do his/her duty as a true citizen. This sort of a person just knows where his/her bread would be buttered and adopts every method in the armoury to shirk responsibility.

It has rightly been said that humans have to interact in order to get his / her needs fulfilled. For this, some social obligations too are placed and for fulfillment of these, one essentially has to have emotional maturity. A person with low level of emotional maturity just goes on blaming others for his/her failings and at times seeks attention by feigning victimized. These people exhibit their emotional upsurges by staging hurtful and blaming others at every pretext so as to attract attention besides diverting others’ attention from the others. Blaming others is their main ploy/pastime. Such people get satisfaction by inflicting sufferings on others by his/her ill-intentioned intent.

In our day to day lives, many a times, we must have seen people who are expert in playing victim despite being law breakers of highest order. They prove so, by their deliberate acts of omissions and commissions besides being frivolous in nature. This could be synonym with ‘the pot calling the kettle black’. It is also rightly been said, if we repeat a lie ten times, then, being humans, we start thinking there may be some semblance of truth – taking cue from the adage ‘no fire without smoke’. When somebody throws mud at us, some of it surely sticks, despite our ducking.

There are people who are always ready to tarnish others’ image by projecting themselves as ‘holier than thou’ and play victimized by hurling frivolous charges which the other person may not have even inkling about. So much so strident is their offense that the actual victim finds it hard to defend or no explanation could placate the feigner. These sorts of people will hurl every sort of blames on others in order to gain easy publicity and sympathy.

We have instances where a community as a whole was forced to leave their homes and hearths under the cruel shadow of gun and the very people cried hoarse for their human rights being muzzled. The actual perpetrators playing or feigning victim under the glare of media had had a negative impact on the psyche of actual victims. The pain of losing the native place where one is born and experienced the ups and downs is known only to the actual victim and not the feigner.

At this, we are reminded of a story of a wolf and a poor lamb. As the lamb was drinking water downstream, the wolf told that it was muddying its water. Lamb, in its exasperation, fearing reprisal told that the water was actually flowing from wolf to the lamb and not otherwise. On this, the wolf anyhow wanted to eat the lamb and pounced upon the lamb and ate it up.

The righteous person will feel disillusioned if somebody labels uncalled-for insinuations against him/her for a questionable behavior; which, if gone through threadbare, will have no takers.

• At Home. There are some members in the family who for attracting attention may cook up stories or manipulate some events in their favour to get undue benefits. It is because family members, due to their proximity know the vulnerability of each person and hence are always on the lookout for taking advantage. At time, some members may feign illness to attract attention in order to escape from taking responsibility.

The main cause of playing victim are inherent prejudices besides jealousies which bedevil the relationships between different people in the family fabric. If these factors are taken care of then sure enough the malady will be removed and an air of trust is established.

• Work Place. We have ourselves experienced some people who are manipulators at the work place. They interfere in the affairs of others in order to prove their worth for winning the brownie points. Such fellows want to project themselves as real contributors for the organization. Such people know where their bread is buttered and buttered nicely. They exploit the propensity of the head of the institution to be swayed by the pep talk or flattery and such people take advantage of this weakness at times by poisoning their ears against others in the organization. When lie is nailed, they try their last weapon of emotional blackmail.

• In Informal Institutions. Playing victim is also rampant in informal institutions where their interests as an institution is concerned albeit at the cost of others. This could be done by adopting any manipulative stratagem as deemed fit; by attacking the vulnerability of others to gain brownie points. Its implications are too bad because general masses just are swayed by informal institutions.

• Playing Victim by the Political Parties. Knowing full well the mood of the people, due to their party’s non-performance coupled with their involvement in different scams while in power, political parties adopt different methodologies to delude the voters to get their support. This strategy does not succeed all the times because of voters’ maturity. They know that this playing victim is mere a show and thus voters pay back in the same coin by defeating the concerned party.

Remedy lies in the political parties to deliver their promises through good governance. Mere feigning victimized does not pay now. It is because masses have not matured and know their rights and duties.

• It is not only true of individuals but also communities and countries. Recent times, we have the examples of some countries which inflict untold death and destruction on the hapless civilians by firing heavy caliber fire but sadly feign ignorance of the same or play victimized by the other country. This is also to getting sympathy and also to divert attention from the real issues and also to wash their hands off their ill-conceived designs. They resort of blackmail when their ill-conceived deceit is detected.

The best solution is to realize the futility of playing victimized and work for a balanced growth in our lives. This could meaningfully be achieved if we adopt spiritual way of living where we do our Karma with the association of God.

There are multifarious challenges which our life throws at us. A true Yogi works towards meeting these challenges which life throws head on, with a spirit of fortitude besides adopting policies based on accommodation, sympathy and cooperation. While meeting challenges, we have to break free from the pre-conceived worn-out ideas which have not stood the test of time. Care should also be exercised that while facing challenges negative traits in the form of anger, jealousy, greed etc should be given burial. For this, the example set by Lord Hanumanji has to be emulated by a Karma Yogi. He was the embodiment of huge strength, courage, and self control besides being wonderfully sagacious. He accepted the challenges of finding Sita Maan while He was told to do so by Lord Rama. He had no inhibition whatsoever in sacrificing his own life for the cause at hand. This he made it abundantly clear while interacting with Demon King Ravana when Lord Hanumanji was brought to his palace. Such wholehearted devotion is expected of us all to break the jinx which life challenges throw on us. If we solve our problems with selfless zeal and enthusiasm most of challenges will vanish in the thin air and make our life peaceful at all times.

While we are overcoming challenges, analyzing the cause of challenges is a natural corollary, it should never be forgotten that there is a elusive hand of Omniscient rendering us His assistance.
When Arjuna was faced with daunting challenges of his lifetime of fighting his own near and dears besides fighting the stalwart warriors superior to him in prowess. The teachings of the Gita helped him win both the internal integrity while facing external challenges and thus achieve complete contentment.

Gunas are the important attributes of all the individuals dealing with person’s physical and spiritual life. These attributes are always at work whether we recognize these or not.

• Sattvic Attributes. Under the Sattvic influence the mind is free of any inertia or agitation. It is in consonance with the Creator. Equanimity prevails in both happy and bad times. There is a better understanding of all the challenges that life throws while working in any situation. A person with Sattvic disposition is in total harmony with himself and his environment. It is like some smokescreen on the mirror which when removed just is a revelation by itself. Bhagavad Gita rightly professes, “He does not avoid light, activity, or illusion…he remains disinterested or unmoved by the qualities of nature.

• Rajasvic Attributes. A person with rajasvic influence aspires for material possessions and is having immense attachment for material possessions including relatives. Equilibrium of this person is disturbed hugely when his particular desire meets with failure. Challenges of life makes this person more restive.

• Attribute of Tamsic Guna. The nature of Tamasic Gunas is lack of cohesive thought; lack of intelligence; hateful conduct and even resort to violence to get things done.

Challenges of our life start on fertilization of the egg In the womb of a mother. Its survival depends on so many factors than one. This ‘survival of the fittest’ is unique in many ways. It goes to show that life itself is a challenge – a challenge of highest order.
• Challenges faced by the Voters. In democratic set up there is a big challenge for the voters as to which party or candidate to be elected to ensure stability and good governance. The voters should vote for the one who has ability and conviction besides huge reserve of integrity to serve the country and not just serving his/her own interest. They should vote for those who deliver and not for those who create artificial policy paralysis.

• Challenge of soft emotions. All have emotional attachment for their love ones and the status quotient but when these soft emotional upsurges go over board/cross the limit then challenges dawn. Wisdom is to keep a healthy balance so that these challenges are dealt with judiciously. This is applicable both in family life and attachment with our possessiveness. It should never be forgotten that our soft emotions are very precious to us all.

• Physical challenges. Notwithstanding big strides made by humans in medical sciences there are innumerable physical challenges encountered by the living beings. Which disease or disability will befall at what time is known only to our Creator. Some are due to us humans and others are just natural. For example the disturbance caused by humans by disturbing ecological balance is cause of many a diseases. Research and development in new medicines for cure of even previously considered incurable diseases like cancer etc have been made possible. But then new crop of diseases are befalling with ferocity due to ecological imbalance.

• Self control. A man can be as he thinks to be. Many a times it has been observed that man is its own enemy. He loses control over his own conscious mind and does something which is against the norms set by the society or acting against the natural laws. Self control is a biggest challenge that we ought to exercise for a ethical and moralistic based living. Self control can also be ensured by first removing all the dross from the human nature. Just surrender ourselves to our Creator is the answer for a total self control. By so doing we can have total and lasting control over all our faculties. This way we can face all the challenges which ‘time’ hurl at us.

SELF-CONTROL has been very rightly enunciated in Bhagwad Gita as:

“He who acts because it is his duty, not thinking of the consequences, is really spiritual and a true ascetic; and not he who merely does rituals or who shuns all action.” O Arjuna! Renunciation is in fact what is called Right Action. No one can become spiritual who has not renounced all desire.

• Challenges of environment. Atmospheric /environmental degradation is causing ecological imbalances and becoming the cause of many a imbalances. Humanity as a whole have to accept the challenges of keeping the ecological balance for a healthy living. This challenge has to be accepted on a war footing otherwise our next generations will suffer the adverse affects in the form of natural furies like tsunami and earthquake and other natural calamities.

• Stress at work place. We encounter problems at work places when we are not able to meet the challenges /expectations of an organization or unable to meet goals. We have to put in sincere effort to accomplish our goals. Not fully meeting the challenges means becoming a cause of stress causing unspeakable consequences. A true Yogi works just faces all challenges with equanimity and remains unfazed in stress or no stress. Try devising various methods to alleviate stress by maintaining composure in stress and strain and work towards it not as a work but as a worship. Not as a stress giving tool but as a stress buster. For this to happen we have to draw out our innate potentials through spiritual forward march.

• Dealing with difficult people. There are challenges furled by people who are fastidious in nature. Do anything to serve their causes; they are not pleased. Just the people with Tamsic mentality (violent mindset) who are very possessive in all their endeavours. They are the people who would adopt even the corrupt or unethical practices for the fructification of their causes. They have no limit in anything.

• Thought of future challenges. More often than not present is the time which we have to live with. Past is the time which we have lived. But instead of living the present moment we remain thinking about the future and its challenges which are uncertain and also do not leave the old blanket of past. By doing so we neither are able to use the experiences gained in the past nor can live in harmony the present moment.

• Heartbroken situation. Life is a journey by twosomes – by male and female. If one is sincere in his/her love and the other one just acts counter to others’ interests. Some people do not get what life challenges throw at them in the form of love and understanding and as a consequence just lose in the bargain. Just heartbroken is the result ultimately.

• Death in the family. Death in a family presents a very demoralizing challenge especially so when deceased one is a sole earning member. Life throws so many challenges on us all. But when a tragedy dawns it will have far reaching affect on us. Coordination and cooperation in the family give fillip to family cohesion and goodwill leading to balanced upbringing of the children to face the challenges that the life throws.

• Challenges in decision making. At times we face challenges in decision making. It may be in our domestic life or workplace or other formal or informal institutions.

• Control over anger and fear. It has been experienced that more often than not we spoil our relationships with the people we come across by intemperate behavior. While in anger; nothing gets accomplished satisfactorily. On the other hand most of our differences are caused due to anger. Thus a challenge for every human is to control this negative trait otherwise it will take away our modesty and sagacity.

• Control over lust. Lust for more possessions and sex outside the recognized institution makes us immoral. This is a challenge we have to face / control otherwise we would not be called a civilized.
It has been illustrated in Bhagwad Gita as:

Thus knowing oneself to be transcendental to the material senses, mind and intelligence, O mighty-armed Arjuna, one should steady the mind by deliberate spiritual intelligence (Kṛṣṇa consciousness) and thus — by spiritual strength — conquer this insatiable enemy known as lust.

• Quest for happiness and challenges thereof. Every human beings have the moral authority to aspire for a happy and prosperous life and the challenges these throw while pursuing the same. It is also helpful in finding one’s self worth and face the challenges of life.

• Challenges to overcome jealousies. Jealousy is one of the negative traits which encourages division in all walks of life. The challenge is to overcome jealousy and enhance the self worth based entirely on love and trust.

Over and above the above referred challenges we have other challenges like:

• Challenges posed due to negative tendencies.
• Single parents.
• Infidelity and forgiving.
• Fear of solitude.
• Challenges in the decision making.
• Marriage and family.
These are a few challenges which are to be analysed threadbare and solved without any wastage of much time otherwise it will challenge our very existence.

All looming doubts have the unfortunate symptoms of creation of looming black clouds of worries / problems in our lives. Attend to the doubt that emerges and solve it then and there. Never sleep over doubts or sweep these under the carpet. Otherwise, these would come out of the carpet and become nightmares / immune to any solution afterwards.

Most of the differences in our lives with others just creep due to incipient doubt. This doubt germinates into our mind and makes a permanent place and gives birth to bitter fruits in the form of worries. These worries tend to imbalance our mental equilibrium.  On the surface of it, we may not agree initially about its (doubt) existence but shadow of doubt remains lurking in our mind even after things have been clarified by the parties concerned and remains pestering us. Thus remains creating still more problems, worries and all the negativities.

For instance, if one of the spouses doubts the fidelity of other, seed of doubt brings about difficulties in adjustment between them. Even if the doubt is clarified yet its shadow remains resulting in aggravation of differences. This adversely affects the familial atmosphere. The children are the hapless victims of this entire doubt game.

Doubt your own abilities,

Find yourself over-shadowed with difficulties,

Work you must to earn your esteem,

By effacing the doubt from your being.

Lingering doubt on the spouse of your own,

Will make your life a bed filled with thorns,

The spikes of which will prick thee every moment,

It’ll also pierce thy conscience the most.

When thy employer doubts they sincerity,

Doubts robs thee of the parity,

In respect,  that you should have got otherwise,

Be not with doubtful sincerity,

It will give birth to vexing disparity.

Think of a man with doubtful integrity,

He lives but without a pure soul,

Right he has to breathe on the soil,

Of his birth, but in his heart of hearts he knows,

That he is living corpse worth nothing to his friends or foes,

He is nothing to the mother, who showed him the dawn of day,

Such a man dies umpteenth times before death favour him actually,

On his death people just utter,

Gone is the man who was burden not only to his own self,

But also on the soil which used to withstand his worthless being.

Doubts should be attended to because of the following:-

  • Problems which if not attended to on time snowball into intractable ones ruining many a lives. It is synonymous with ‘A Stitch in Time Saves Nine’.

  • Worries are like termite pests which eat our entire system from within if no anti-termite is used within timeframe.

I have penned down two poems titled PROBLEM & WORRY. Kindly comment. I love your comments for self-improvement.

A life bereft of problem is a life bereft of creativity,
No problem to solve means nothing in life to look for,
Life in essence, is a continuous journey with a lot of activity,
Every step of the ladder of the life which counts,
Sometimes we slip but zeal to step up must not cease.
Mathematic problems can be made easy and solved
With the time-tested formulae, times without number,
But daily life problems have no laid down forms or norms.
Problem like Picador fight has to be resorted,
To weaken the problem into pieces,
Peace-meal resolution brings ease and peace,
Evincing of recovery if bogged down,
By the pestering and knotty problem at hand.

Problem, if left unresolved, becomes a pestering sore,
Resulting in resentment festered in mind and spirit.
Nature of problem is contagious like flue,
If left to itself, unattended and untracked,
It adds on and piles up by making kinship
With similar other stonewalling maladies
Becoming unwieldy and finally macabre ghost
Haunting day and day out.
When confronted with problem
Faith in our Creator and in our inner resolve is a must
Tackle it with a sculptor’s touch
Who chisels the uneven lump of marble into fine statue.

A worry for a work not expected to be finished,

As anticipated,

A worry for not reaching the destined place,

On time and losing thyself in the bargain,

Beginning something with a heavy heart,

For the end result,

Worries for not meeting targets,

Worry – consequence of excessive consciousness,

Brings in its wake less confidence,

A self-created notion,

That whatever you’ll put your hand on,

Will go bust, though, that belief may be unfounded,

Too much concern for expressions,

In various ways, engendering self-consciousness,

An exaggerated sense,

Of self-importance,

Egged with excessive dose,

Of Ego  and its appeasement,

Self-importance, others, beings just on the fringe,

A man on crucial mission,

An over-ambitious one,

Aspiring over-reach to the stars in the universe,

Every bump and turn in life,

Results into still more worry in turn,

Worry for riches and not meeting standards set for thyself,

Tension goes upstream,

Rationality takes back seat,

Confidence takes a downslide,

Here the harbinger of hope is,

The thought that thee is not the doer,

Belief that Creator’s presence will kill worries head on,

When end result is not thought of,

But action holds prominence,

Only action, with His Gentle Touch,

Will make huge difference,

And infuse immense confidence,

A first step in success of any mission under the sun,

Knowing less about the limitations,

Of a being,

It is akin to worrying,

Of a hen for its eggs to be hatched,

If initially, results are not on expected lines,

Should be left to His wish,

Which will prove to be a game changer,

Seemingly, a solution to our vexing problem,

By axing the element of worry from our midst,

For a better present,

A worriless course for a bump less road,

For smooth sailing and healthy living,

An egoless trail,

Tailor-made by His Grace.

We have to perform our multifarious functions in our lives. Axiomatically, it is not that we always meet with success in our endeavours. More often than not, we may have to weather many a storms while accomplishing tasks. Wise people just continue transacting their assigned tasks without let or hindrance. Failure at some point of time or other does not shake their resolve to continue still further. One failure is a stepping stone for these fellows to make still more efforts to fructify their efforts. Such people are the example, for others to follow.

Life is not a bed of roses always. Sometimes, we act but our actions are not as successful as ought to be. In other times, a little effort bears fruits for us. It is a travesty of face in our lives which should never be forgotten. It has also been seen that while we fail, we lose confidence altogether. People with strong determination do not lose heart, but make concerted efforts to catch up and with the grace of Almighty God come out unscathed.

It has also been experienced that some people just lose themselves while facing adverse results and go to the limit of committing the sin of self-destruction by adopting shortcuts of forgetting their worries by falling into the prey / trap of various addictions. These shortcuts to forget the worries just compound their worries. Such people ultimately end up losing their everything under the sun including their families, friend circle and other well-wishers still further. Losing our love ones, due to our faults means losing every hope to live tranquilly. For such people, JOURNEY OF LIFE just ends partly due to their internal conflicts and partly due to external factors beyond their control.

Following aspects need to be kept in mind while travelling the bumpy paths of our life’s JOURNEY ahead:-

  • End of Road is not the End of Journey. It should never be forgotten that one failure in life should not deter us to continue still further till we become successful ultimately.

  • Self-Realization. A self-realized person is the one who knows his / her stronger and weaker areas. That person dives deep / delves in his / her internal self and exploits the reservoir of huge energy dormant in their system. This sort of a person maintains equanimity in weal and woe.

  • Faith in our Creator. Whenever an adverse situation knocks our door, we ought to seek our Creator assistance. With right attitude and sincerity at our command, He will surely steer clear of boat. Also, faith in Him creates faith in ourselves.

  • Self-Discipline. A person who does not have discipline in his / her life just is not able to go ahead in the Journey of Life. That person curses his fate for every adversity that befalls him / her but never introspects that that situation is his / her own creation. Nobody should be held responsible for our state of affairs. Self-disciplined individual just passes the tests of time in his Journey ahead without any hurdles.

  • Challenges ought to be Challenged. We have the shining example of our young cricketer YUVI who defied / challenged even as debilitating disease as cancer with his personal resolve and confidence in himself and his Creator. On the other hands, if we just acquiesce to challenges that come in the journey of our lives, we just lose heart to go further and end our journey of life. Face the life with a Courage:

When people are falling like nine-pins around ye unsung

Muster courage to hold on till the last drop

For somebody is required to pick up the fallen pals.

When ye fathom you are right

But hard-boiled truth dawns, you are otherwise

Accept that truth with courage

And put your ‘right’ to tests

Thou not stand on ceremony

It will inevitably isolate you from the rests.

When encircled in the web of uncertainty

In us, a part of overall order of things

Have courage to accept to accept the good words

Of anybody betwixt

Embrace that rightly to free thee out of a fix.

Whilst travelling in unknown land

Finding your fellow being in tattered attire and in pain

Muster courage to know his state

Mitigate his suffering – if you can

If not, few kind words will cost though nothing.

O, Lord, shower thy blessings, we are in dire need

So that we are courageous to blot out

Disparity from humanity based on caste, colour and creed.

  • Life’s Journey is based on the Principle of Jointmanship. In our life’s journey ahead, we just whine that our of point of view has not been given credence. Imagine, are we accommodating others’ point of view? Our views are dearest to us while expecting much from others. Others needs and aspirations have no place in our scheme of things. It should never be forgotten that fastidious ones are isolated. Much of our differences in day to day lives; in our homes, amongst our peer group, society in general are due to this reason. If we want to make the journey of our life smooth, we shall have to be accommodative. It has to be a jointmanship venture. Hackneyed sermons have to be discarded.

With this intension in mind, I have written a poem titled LIFE’S JOURNEY, kindly go through. I solicit your comments because your points make indelible impact on me and motivate me to go on.

Every one navigates the part of distance in life,

As apportioned by our CREATOR,

Some fail to negotiate even an inch,

And merge with Him earlier than expected,

Some are stuck amidst pain plentiful,

Some exit without succour from any quarter,

Some lay a hand on margins and perish,

Some are left asunder by the whirlwinds of chance,

Some swayed by the unwieldy winds of time,

Time, which does not wait for mighty or light,

Some go in circles whole of their life span,

Confusion writ large on their faces with weary pain,

Remain back-pedaling from where started with little gain.

Lively are those who defy hurdles and act,

And overcome their tasks,

With a missionary zeal,

To strike the goal post of life,

With a bang in style.

Life befriend those,

Who do not stop the life’s journey,

When meeting with bumpy ride,

They dare take the bull of life by the horns,

And win the day with stumbling blocks galore,

They make the bumpy road blocks as their stepping stone,

And win laurels against all odds,

For a journey ahead –  acting here and now,

Life’ Journey covered yesterday,

Will add up today’s one,

And make difference in your journey ahead,

The one where you set your foot presently this moment,

Yesterday’s endeavours will add up in today’s actions,

And will benefit tide over tomorrow’s travels

And provide thee a giant stride ahead with pride.

ANGER – A DRAG ON OUR INNER ENERGY

It is our common knowledge that we ourselves can make or mar our lives. We can earn self esteem by exhibiting good traits in the society in which we are living or otherwise be in the eye of a storm. Choice remains with us. Nobody other than us is responsible for out doing and undoing.

It has also been observed how our youth is angered in schools, colleges and other educational institutions on silly pretext. Whenever they feel ‘let down they do not adopt ‘let go’ attitude.  his is happening and we are he silent spectators. Dismayed though. The end result, we are witnessing; the killing sprees by the students in our schools / colleges on silly excuse – a excuse which could be forgotten being of no consequence. And why this is happening? It is happening because we are not devoting our quality time and resources to nurture our children to remain calm when under provocation. More often than not, it has been seen that the parents are partly at blame because they did not stop their children when they observed their children doing one negative act. They just glossed over. They just let it happen and thus it had indelible impression on the child’s psyche and thus playing havoc now.

Qualities of tolerance, patience, forgetting and forgiving are to be given to our youth both in the formal institutions and at home too. Evil of anger has to be nipped in the bud itself. Otherwise, the consequence we are witnessing will take hydra headed snake’s dimension thus engulfing not only the doers but the hapless bystanders too.

It is never one way traffic. If you show anger even on an occurrence which could just be forgotten with ‘let go’ attitude, is made to be ‘let in’ attitude by temper flaring up; the consequences of which could be disastrous. It will not only tell badly on our internal body system but also, in the process, you have added one more ‘dislike’ in the list you have earned over a period of time. This just goes on, if checks and balance audit is not done regularly on our anger. The result of anger cannot be LOVE, it will be generation of more anger only.

Anger too is bad in our forward march for self realization. With anger looming large, we cannot   focus our attention on anything under the sun. May it be your studies for acquiring knowledge, forward march in the spiritual awakening, for you will never be focused inwardly being pre-occupied by your senses and its appeasement! For Inner Knowledge of our own selves, it is of prime importance that we remain positive oriented, removing the garbage of anger away from our being, remain at peace with ourselves and with the environs in which we are living, take care that we never are swayed by outer attacks on ourselves.

Our inner defensive shield should be such that it should offensively protect us from outer bad influences. That missile shield of defence can make us immune to  missiles in the form of anger, rencour, jealousy- by obliterating these when these attack us.

Anger will also prove be a drag on our Inner Energy Reservoir, of which exploration can only be done with concentration, better connectivity with our outer and inner self.

With the intention in mind, I have penned down a poem, highlighting the consequences of anger.

Kindly critically comment. I get inspiration and motivation to write through your critique.

When thy perceptions go awry,

Doubt persists for every doubtless thing,

our mathematics goes in disarray,

We add two plus two as three,

Our rationality takes backseat,

Mind receptors get beating,

Sugar tastes vinegar,

Vinegar itself loses its flavour,

Thy taste-buds turn insipid,

When thyself remain no thyself,

You smell rat in every deal,

The bountiful fragrance gives,

Repulsive odour in rage.

Thy touch becomes even more awry,

Meda’s touch impedes,

Flawed feelings perceive,

Soft feelings for others turn,

Barbed and spiky.

Hearing becomes frigid,

Fascinating music loses its charm,

Ye think it will do more harm,

Anger takes away the music of life,

From our midst, whilst in anger.

If thee aspire to live a Balanced life,

Shun the anger that robs you

From yourself,

And puts you in somebody else’s clothing.

The main question is, whether any irrational argument could be won by anybody?

It is rightly been said that a sagacious person will prefer discussion over argument for that person knows that nobody can win an argument. It goes on and on. The end result of an argument is end of friendship / intimacy. It starts over a petty thing and slanging match just goes on nonstop. Neither side concedes defeat. Sometimes it leads to acrimony and bad blood. Arguments between the spouses, over small matter, just snowballs into a biggest flare up, occasionally breaking up the fabric of the household. A well-knit house alas! just breaks up.

Arguments for a seat in the bus goes on till after the journey to the destined place just ends and the poor chair just stares at the faces of the argumentative parties. Arguments over trifles results in fights resulting in disproportional consequences is seen every other day.

Arguments are the negative traits of not only humans but also that of the animal world. In fact, it can better be termed as animal like trait which unfortunately none wins finally. We must have witnessed the snarls between the two dogs over the possession of a bitch which just looks on helplessly. In this fight both the dogs just fight it out resulting in blood bath on both sides. Here too there is no perceptible winner!

Internal Strife spun out of control,

Incident which ought to have been swept under the carpet,

Has gone to the public domain,

Takes untold toll on both sides through fruitless arguments,

Starts from soft tinkering with words,

Over matter so trifling,

To a full fight resulting.

Spreading like fire untamed,

Engulfing even luckless around.

Arguments on a matter in the household,

Between spouses on a matter so insignificant,

Not controlled in time goes hurting,

To the wellbeing of home well knit.

Disagreeing with interviewer,

And sticking to the points stubbornly,

Thus burning the very bridge,

Which could have made him to cross over,
For cornering a lifelong career.

Just not budging even an inch,

Arguments with a person unknown,

Even Universal Truth so widely agreed,

Is not agreeable to the fellow in question!

Arguments with fastidious one is a waste of time,

Who knows only how an argument could be won anyhow!

Loses friends in hordes,

And earns enemies in the bargain,

While in power the ‘chair’ speaks for that fellow,

But when out of it,

Persons suffered at his hands take control,

And you can fathom what would be his fate,

For by-product of hate is only further hate,

That person realizes the consequence of his folly but too late,

He faces music of his own making now.
